Animal Lovers' Books:
Nicky's Picks for Books - Page 2!
The Cornell Book of Cats edited by Mordecai Siegal:
My mom always tells people that if they're only going to get one book about cats, then this is the one. It covers a lot of health, behavior, nutrition, and other issues. It can help you understand what's normal and what information you should take to your veterinarian.
Kittens for Dummies by Dusty Rainbolt:
This is a book everyone should read before they get a kitten. My mom got me as a kitten and I'm glad, but she didn't know anything about kittens back then. It took a lot of work for me to teach her everything and I wouldn't like to see any other kitten go through this. This book may also make you say, "Hey, I can't handle a kitten." If it does, that's good. Maybe you'll rescue an adult OR maybe you shouldn't get an animal. It's better to know that before you get one and break its heart by giving it up. Dusty writes Science Fiction, too. Check out her website at www.dustycatwriter.com
"For Every Dog an Angel" and "For Every Dog an Angel" by Christine Davis. If you've ever lost a special pet, these books are a "must read". The back cover says, "A Magical little book for those who have found their forever dog (cat) and for those who hope to." These books celebrate the fact that our relationship with our pets never end. There is Eternal Life for Animals by Niki Behrikis Shanahan:
I can't believe that there are people who actually question whether cats go to heaven or not, but my mom says there are a lot out there who do. If you're one of them or you know someone who is, then this is the book for you. Actually, this is a good book to read even if you're one of the lucky people who know that we go to heaven. Check out her website at www.eternalanimals.com
Cat Massage by Maryjean Ballner:
According to the author, this book can help socialize and calm the temperament of a cat and increase the bond with your human. Purrsonally, I just know that it feels really good. My mom says she's used it on fosters, but that happens behind closed doors because the fosters are isolated. Mom says it does all the things the book says it does. Maryjean also has a great video demonstrating her techniques. You can get her book and video on her website www.catanddogmassage.com. (In all fairness I should say that she has versions for d-o-gs)
Pet Care in the New Century (Cutting-edge Medicine for Dogs and Cats) by Amy Shojai:
The cover says that it's an easy-to-use A-to-Z Reference for Specific Health and Behavior Problems and it is. It was hard to pick just one book by this author, so I'd suggest that you check out her website at www.shojai.com and see everything else she's done.
Mewsing/Musings by Simon Teakettle and Barbara Florio Graham:
This clever flipbook has Simon Teakettle's thoughts on one side (he's a cat, like me) and his mom's thoughts on the other side. Simon's a great writer and his mom's not bad, either., although we all know that humans don't think as deeply as us cats. You can learn more about this book on Simon's website www.simonteakettle.com
Calico Tales by Betsy Stowe :
This is a book of Betsy Stowe's poetry and beautiful black and white pictures. Some of them will make you laugh; some will make you cry; and some will strike a chord of remembrance deep in your soul because you've experienced those same feelings. Even if you're not a poetry lover (which I am because my mom always makes up rhymes about me), you should definitely read this book. Once you've read it, you'll find yourself returning to some of the poems over and over.
The Feline Mystique by Clea Simon:
This book explores the intense connection between women and cats. Simon shares details of her personal life and the bond she has with her cat, Cyrus (kind of like me and my mom) , but has also done a lot of investigating into the history of the love between woman and cats. She must be part cat because I thought only us cats could do good investigating, but she has lots of facts that are told in a way that I really loved. The book has even been translated into French. I told my mom that it's the cat's meow! It's easy and fun reading and you won't even notice that you're learning stuff (Sometimes learning stuff can be boring.)
